Despite missing five starters to international duty, the Seattle Reign managed to push their season-opening unbeaten streak to 12 games. Their 2-0 win on the road against the Boston Breakers pushed their record to 10-0-2 and gives them a eight-point cushion with two games in hand on second-place FC Kansas City.
Beverly Goebel got the Reign off to a fast start, scoring her second goal of the season in the 2nd minute. Goebel was able to shield a defender and create a one-on-one opportunity against the goalkeeper after taking a pass from Danielle Foxhoven. It was the first time in the Reign’s last five that they’ve scored the first goal.
From there, the Reign were mostly content to defend. Haley Kopmeyer made five saves to record her first shutout and the Reign’s fifth of the season.
The Reign were playing without U.S. internationals Sydney Leroux, Stephanie Cox andHope Solo, Scotland international Kim Little and Wales international Jessica Fishlock. Little scored against in a 2-0 win over Northern Ireland and Fishlock had three assists in a 3-0 win over Belarus.
All five players will return to the Reign prior to their game on Sunday against the Western New York Flash.
