The Deaf Women’s National Team Needs Our Help

Today, I’m hoping that all of you will help make a real difference in the lives of some of our country’s greatest athletes. They need our help.

The U.S. Deaf Women’s National Team (USDWNT) heads to the 2016 Deaf World Cup later this week to defend its world championship—they’ve won three in a row, actually—but the team is severely underfunded. In fact, unlike every other team participating in the Deaf World Cup, the USDWNT receives no funding from the national federation.

Together, today, I’m hoping we can help give them the money they need.

There are a few different ways you can do this.

Donate directly to the team through it’s Go Fund Me page. Over the past two years, they’ve raised $10,000, but they’re $90,000 short of their goal.

We can change that together. Right now.

You can also go to the team’s Etsy page, and buy one of their great shirts. Every single purchase goes to support the team.

For me, one of the most wonderful things about being a member of the Women’s National Team is inspiring girls all over the world to play soccer. When girls tell us that we’re the reason they love the game, it means more than anything.

Now just imagine the impact that the women on our Deaf Women’s National Team can have on girls who can’t hear. Or let Kate Ward, a member of the team, tell you in her own words:

So the question is still, “Why should you cheer for the U.S. Deaf Women’s National Team?”

If you’re a woman, or you have a sister, daughter, aunt, or mother, you should cheer for my teammates because they are everything a female role model should be—strong, determined, intelligent, and successful and willing to take risks. If you’re an American, you should cheer for us because we represent the red, white, and blue. If you’re deaf, you should cheer for us because we are striving to destroy stereotypes, break barriers, and bring awareness to the Deaf community. Oh: and we win.

If you ask any young female soccer player right now who her hero is, I can guarantee you that it will be someone along the lines of Abby Wambach, Hope Solo, Carli Lloyd or any other current USWNT player. My hope is that one day you can ask a little deaf girl who her hero is, and maybe you’ll hear one of our names. I hope that we are able to empower deaf and hearing people across the nation and remind them that your dreams are felt, not heard.

You can read Kate’s letter in its entirety here, along with some facts about team’s accomplishments, and I’ve included a video about the team below.

Lastly, follow the USDWNT on Twitter and Facebook.

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this, and for supporting the USDWNT!

This is a such massive and beautiful showing of support! It really means a lot to those involved and their family and friends. Thank you! Such a class act; so well done!
    Love it!
Thank you also for mentioning the disparity of financial support between the teams competing. I can’t believe the folks at US Soccer and/or a major sponsor (Nike) would not want to participate in such an inspirational and beautiful event!

    Well, now we have HOPE!

    Yay! Cheers to you,
    James
